Carlisle TyrFil™ Flatproofing Salutes Planet Earth This Month

Millions of Americans will put a spotlight on the environment during this month of April, as we once again celebrate annual Earth Day.  Carlisle is proud to be one of the many companies in the U.S., and around the world, devoted to developing sustainable products and services with eco-conservation in mind.  After all, it’s easy for businesses to talk about “being green”—it’s another thing to incorporate sustainability directly into the fabric of product development and embed a deep environmental ethos into the company infrastructure.  And, that’s exactly what the Carlisle brands, and specifically our organization’s off-the-road (OTR) tire flatproofing and productivity technologies unit, Carlisle TyrFil (manufacturer of the industry leading TyrFil™ Flatproofing for OTR equipment), has been striving to achieve for nearly 50 years.  We believe that there’s no better way to protect the many treasures of our Planet than with a long-standing commitment to greater sustainability in manufacturing.

In 1971, TyrFil™ was invented—and at the time, it marked a breakthrough in tire flatproofing technology and was the world’s first polyurethane tire fill material, commonly referred to in the industry as foam fill, designed to virtually eliminate dangerous flats on the job.  Since then, Carlisle and its extensive aftermarket dealer and OEM network have made it a top priority to bring environmentally supportive products to market—all part of a long-term business strategy to manufacture quality tire flatproofing and productivity technologies for the Off-the-Road (OTR) equipment industry, while also working to better protect and preserve our natural resources.

Today, in 2019, Carlisle proudly continues to extend its utilization of green technology and practices. This commitment is directly evidenced in three key business areas outlined below:  1) Carlisle’s production protocols, 2) our technology formulations, and 3) through our partnerships with organizations such as American Forests (the nation’s oldest conservation entity) that are exclusively dedicated to advancing ecological programs.

Carlisle Processing

Carlisle TyrFil is presently the industry’s only tire fill manufacturer to offer recycling processing equipment.  This equipment had helped to keep more than 150 million pounds of tire fill out of landfills.  Carlisle’s signature TyrFil™ recycling technology —the AutoFil Machine, Green Machine and Belt Drive—offer the only flatproofing solution with a Closed-Loop System to reduce carbon footprint and save on production costs.  This Recycling Processing technology helps to decrease the environmental impact of traditional Tire Flatproofing in the following ways:

  • It helps to recycle and use up to 65% post-consumer tire fill
  • It effectively eliminates up to 65% of the petrochemicals (including oil) that are typically needed to fill an Off-the-Road (OTR) tire
  • It also helps to keep used tire fill out of landfills and eliminates landfill disposal fees

 Our Formulations

The Carlisle Recycling Technology mixes virgin TyrFil™ with either used tire flatproofing, crumb rubber, or even previously mixed materials, eliminating the environmental impact of sending used polyurethane and used rubber to the landfill.  By using the Recycling Equipment with TyrFil™ EcoFil (a water-based formulation), Carlisle is working to decrease petrochemical production and waste by a dramatic 75% of what has been traditionally used in tire flatproofing applications.  This capability is a direct result of Carlisle’s innovative science and R&D—and it’s a key component of our sustainable flatproofing solution.

Carlisle’s Recycling Technology also has been field-proven for more than a decade to meter and mix controlled amounts of virgin liquid tire fill and granulated tire fill to a homogenous TyrFil™ flatproofing mixture that fills the tire exactly the same as virgin liquid tire fill.  Typical materials used include 1) granulated recycled fill, 2) rubber crumb, and 3) rubber crumb and recycled fill mix. We use recycled and repurposed materials whenever and wherever possible.

Our Partnerships

An additional key element of Carlisle Tire Fill System’s pro-environment focus involves our long-standing partnership with American Forests.  This prestigious and storied non-profit organization has been caring for the preservation of our national forest systems since 1875.  Carlisle, along with American Forest, has teamed up with TyrFil™ customers, aftermarket dealers and distributors around the world to help restore forests destroyed by natural disasters.

The initiative is part of the company’s “One Tote, One Tree” green campaign, which facilitates the replanting of one new sapling tree for every single tote of Carlisle TyrFil product purchased. Throughout this program, Carlisle and its network, have proudly helped to reforest recent burn areas affected by the Pole Creek and El Dorado fires in the Western United States.

In 2017, Carlisle’s donations also helped American Forests (in its work with the U.S. Forest Service) to plant more than 40,000 whitebark pines in a region of the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem in Wyoming (part of the Shoshone National Forest).  This specific restoration effort was part of a 10-year reforestation project to mitigate the effects of blister rust and mountain pine beetle damage that have decimated the area and led to tree mortality exceeding 80 percent in many portions of that region.

At Carlisle, we continue to be hard at work to bring more reliable and ecologically sound solutions to market.  We believe that companies such as ours can and do truly have a positive impact on the overall health of our Planet and the communities where we live and work.  It’s our responsibility to care for the many constituents we serve and support the industry in a proactive and socially conscious manner—and we’re proud to do it, this April and each month of the year.

Happy Earth Day!
