Carlisle TyrFil: “On a Roll” for Better Planet Health in 2024

Carlisle TyrFil has made environmental integrity an essential part of our business since our brand’s inception in 1971, when industry leading TyrFil™ Flatproofing technology first came onto the market. TyrFil, our signature polyurethane “foam fill” for pneumatic Off-the-Road (OTR) tires, has offered heavy equipment operators a greener, more eco-friendly alternative to solid aperture tires for the past five decades.

Sustainability + Improved Flatproofing Performance

TyrFil polyurethane offers the industry’s most effective means of deterring unwanted tire flats on the job. Using TyrFil, OTR vehicles and earthmoving machines can safely operate over typical worksite debris (such as sharp rocks, glass, nails and rebar) without incident. The TyrFil product line has been the hallmark for tire fill quality and innovation within the polyurethane liquid fill space because of its performance record and measured efficiency when it comes to preventing leaks, flats and punctures. Our polyurethane fill, which can be pumped into any OTR pneumatic tire to replace air with a resilient, synthetic elastomer core, eliminates flats. Because of its reputation for reliability and cost-savings, TyrFil has become the de facto gold standard within the tire fill industry and is now preferred by many rental equipment companies and equipment owners looking to better manage their bottom line.

The innovative foam fill solution in TyrFil is easily delivered through a valve stem and cures within 24 hours to offer super shock absorption and a ride that is as close as it gets to air inflation. TyrFil works in any tire with a sound casing and is designed to maintain tire pressure and footprint shape – even in the most adverse weather conditions, including temperatures as low as 70 degrees below zero, and in sweltering heat.

Simply put, TyrFil polyurethane fill is the right investment for sustainably minded OTR heavy equipment entities looking to reduce carbon footprint. TyrFil helps to eliminate whole tire and tire scrap waste from clogging our already over-cluttered global landfills. The polyurethane in our foam filled tires can be reclaimed much easier than the rubber in solid tires, which saves our dealers and OEMs, and their customers, additional expenditures—while also reducing environmental impact. Because tire carcasses can be reutilized with foam fill technology, they are able to enjoy a second product lifecycle.

In contrast, when solid tires are retired, they clog up landfills and create toxic waste piles that can remain in the environment for years. These tire piles are highly vulnerable to “tire fires” that can be extremely difficult to extinguish and create long term unwanted carbon emissions. Additionally, the volume of solid tire refuse—on a domestic and worldwide scale—has concerning environmental implications:

  • Each year, the U.S. alone generates more than 290 million tires.
  • Approximately 4 billion + tires presently fill global landfills and stockpiles.
  • Tires are widely considered to be one of most problematic sources of waste due to alarming levels of fossil fuels and other raw materials used in their production.
  • Solid tire waste in landfills also takes up extensive space and scrap tire pieces are not biodegradable.
  • The need for additional landfill square footage to accommodate tire waste can promote mosquito infestation, which in turn, can breed vector-borne disease.

In contrast, Carlisle’s TyrFil offering delivers an alternate tire technology solution to the OTR heavy equipment industry that is sustainable and more budget-efficient for operators and project managers alike and can be utilized across multiple vertical industries such as construction, mining, waste management and agribusiness. Supporting a “triple bottom line” mindset that endeavors to better protect people and our planet (while also maintaining a profitable business model), TyrFil is an innovative formulation that works to eliminate all of the above negative environmental factors created by tire scrap disposal.

What are some of the other eco-advantages of TyrFil technology?

  • Unlike solid tires, tire fill material is recyclable.
  • TyrFil can utilize engineered Rubber Crumb from scrap tires, again repurposing and recycling existing material, for second life use in asphalt, playgrounds, and athletic fields.
  • Using TyrFil, operators have a choice of durometer, which empowers and enables operators to accurately select the right tire technology for the job so that tire provisions are more useful and efficient—resulting in less tire discard due to poor functionality and on-site performance.

As part of Carlisle’s commitment to support the environment, we have also made it a priority to advance the recycling technology and equipment that our network of OEMs and aftermarket dealers have come to rely upon. Our TyrFil™ Recycling Processing Equipment – the AutoFil Machine and Green Machine – offers a flatproofing solution with a Closed-Loop System that reduces carbon footprint, while also lowering production expenditures. These systems decrease the environmental impact of traditional Tire Flatproofing by 1) recycling and using up to 65% post-consumer tire fill, 2) eliminating up to 65% of the petrochemicals (including oil) normally required to fill an OTR tire, and 3) helping to keep used tire fill out of landfills and eliminate landfill disposal fees.

Additionally, Carlisle’s signature AutoFil and Green Machine Recycling Processing Equipment utilizes virgin TyrFil with either used tire flatproofing, crumb rubber, or even previously mixed materials, eliminating the environmental impact of sending used polyurethane and used rubber to the landfill. Moreover, our TyrFil production also effectively reutilizes recyclable material to repurpose discarded materials. For example, Carlisle’s AutoFil and Green Machine systems, which have been proven and tested for more than 10 years, mix controlled amounts of virgin liquid tire fill and granulated tire fill to produce a homogenous TyrFil™ flatproofing mixture that fills the tire exactly the same as virgin liquid tire fill. (Materials composition includes granulated recycled fill, rubber crumb, and rubber crumb and recycled fill mix.)

As we continue to advance our industry-changing TyrFil technology, we remain committed to helping minimize the consumption of non-renewable raw materials, while maximizing value creation for our customers and the OTR tire marketplace overall. When manufacturers and heavy equipment vehicle operators choose tire fill over solid tires, they are taking measurable steps to contribute to a healthier environment and reduce industrial carbon footprint—and we believe this is a proactive decision that all players in our category who strive for greater sustainability on the job site can embrace.

Please join us as we commit to “Keeping the World Rolling” while also helping to play a role in furthering our industry’s efforts to make responsible choices and aspire for a better future for our planet. Carlisle TyrFil has proven—through tangible business practices, partnerships, green production and responsible product choices—that innovation and sustainability can coexist and become a competitive advantage for all concerned.
