How Long Do Airless Tires Last?

There is nothing more frustrating than discovering you have a flat tire in the middle of a job. This is one of the main reasons that airless tires have boomed in popularity over the years, as it makes costly punctures a thing of the past.

As punctures aren’t the only cause for tires wearing out, many people interested in making the switch to airless tires wonder how long they’re expected to last.

After being recognized as the leader in tire flatproofing systems across the US for more than 50 years, the team at Carlisle TyrFil is more than equipped to answer all your airless tire questions – contact our expert team for more information.

How Long Do Airless Tires Last

What Are Airless Tires?

Unlike traditional tires, which are made from rubber and filled with compressed air, our flatproofing solution sees us pump pneumatic tires full of a unique polyurethane liquid that cures into a solid elastomer. This prevents punctures and enables the tires to flex and change shape when the machine encounters rough terrain, working with it rather than against it.

These tires have been popular in smaller vehicles, like golf carts and lawnmowers, for some time now, but their use in larger machinery is a more recent advancement.

What Are the Benefits of Airless Tires?

Airless tires offer a number of benefits besides the obvious, including:

  • They don’t go flat
The clever design of these tires eliminates the possibility of punctures, allowing you to continue with your job uninterrupted. It also reduces the risk of a dangerous tire blowout occurring, which can be even more hazardous when driving heavy machinery due to its sheer size and weight.
  • They require less maintenance
You may not think that traditional tires require a lot of maintenance, but you need to keep an eye on the air pressure to ensure that your machine isn’t left stranded with a flat. While the air pressure doesn’t need to be checked too often in a smaller vehicle, it must be checked frequently in larger machinery due to the weight the tires support.
  • They save you money
Needing to replace your tires less often will save you money – which is great when you consider the high cost of tires for heavy machinery. You’ll also save money on unnecessary downtime for changing tires and repairing punctures, which will ensure projects are more likely to be finished on time (better for your bottom dollar).
  • They’re more environmentally friendly
The other benefit of needing to replace tires less often is that less waste is produced, which is a big tick in helping to meet any business’ eco-friendly commitment. When they do need to be replaced, the fact they’re comprised of a single material means that they’re easier to recycle than traditional tires.
  • They provide a smoother ride
Many people are surprised at how smooth and comfortable airless tires are, even on the bumpy terrain of the everyday worksite. This is due to their substantially lower G-force transmission. Higher G-force transmission has been known to cause operator injury, as well as premature wear and tear on your machinery.

How Long Do Airless Tires Last?

There is currently no way to know exactly how long airless tires will last, as this depends on a number of factors (including the environments they’re used in and the types of machines they’re used on). However, it is expected that they will last two to three times as long as traditional tires.

It’s recommended that you check over the tires as a part of your annual maintenance inspections to ensure that the wear on the tread allows for proper performance and safety.
